My Review:

Now, I am not one to give my reviews "Fluff" So believe me when I say this book is EPIC! I could not stop reading it. It was the type of book that drew you in and had you fighting for the characters with every new page. A MUST READ for anyone really. It has all the great elements to draw any person in: Love, Vengeance, Drama, Mystery, Adventure, I really could just go on and on about it but regardless you need to read it. We start by meeting Breena. She has lived such a hard and horrible life, it just breaks your heart. I fell in love with her personality form the start. She just grabs your attention and you know she may be small and hurt, but she is a little survivor. She will rise above all this and as a reader we will be there to urge her on. We follow her through teetering on death and the many obstacles her comatose life throws at her. Slowly we get to see her change into a wonderful strong person. I really can't justify calling her a "girl" as at her young 14 she has been through hell. Her age may be young, but this girl is an old soul. You fight each battle with these characters. While we are battling in another realm with Breena, in the present life we are hunting down her attacker with Galbrecht. He is on a mission and I hope to all heck he finds his peace for himself and all others hurt by this man. Every little bit of his adventure into the depths of scum I was holding my breath a little more. I want SO BAD for him to give what is deserved and to save Breena, but alas I cannot tell you much more as it could ruin the book and I REALLY don't want to do that :) This book is great. I mean really just a fantastic read (Think I have said that a few times now) I was instantly pulled into the story from the first page and couldn't put it down. With the chapters switching realms and character POV it is always kept interesting. The book also rotates into parts 1-3 which gives you an idea of where it is going. I really enjoyed the plot of this book as well. It was new and attention grabbing. Jake really works his own magic with this story. Its almost like watching a movie. Though I think it should be a Tv show, as a 2 hour movie could in NO WAY to is justice. Well, even a TV show wouldn't but it would be closer. Scratch that, I like the show I have going in my head just fine :) But really, Go read this book. Its worth your time and most certainly a top of the list book for me.

Book Synopsis:

A Thin Line Separates Justice From Revenge....
Fourteen-year-old Breena Taljain’s dreary existence in the slums of Purgaire comes to a sudden end when a chance encounter with a criminal mastermind known as the Patriarch goes horridly wrong. His assault on her for refusing to pay for her mother’s addiction leaves her comatose and teetering on the edge of life and death.
Galbrecht Atalir is a washed-up doctor struggling to overcome his inner demons through alcohol and aggression. He never quite recovered from the unsolved murder of his family seven years prior. When he discovers Breena as his newest patient, he knows at once that the Patriarch is the one who eluded him for almost a decade.
The medicine Galbrecht gives Breena draws her into a heavenly paradise. When it ebbs away, though, the recurring trauma plunges her into treacherous hinterlands. There, Breena must learn to find power in courage, hope, and love to overcome fiends of hatred bent on permanently ending her existence.
With justice burning in his heart, Galbrecht begins a race against time to seek out the Patriarch in the underworld before Breena loses her struggle against the ever-darkening terrors of her mind…

Exclusive Teaser:

The Ifrit King rebounded gracefully and stood over her in full, terrible splendor. He was titanic! Breena wondered how Izanagi had ever sealed him away in the first place. Puny or not, Mulciber grudgingly admitted that she cast a shadow as grand as his kin. Even now she refused to cringe in his presence. Just kill me already and stop prolonging this charade, Mulciber. Be done with it already. You won. Even her ragged, telepathic scorn had an edge to it. Maybe her death would give Veku a chance to escape. Would Amphitrite and the nymphs miss her? You are nothing compared to me. Nothing! Breena tried to take a step towards the beast and nearly fell forward. Her body had lost its oomph. Still, she had sworn that she would not give Mulciber the benefit of seeing her surrender. “You may be a king of your kind, but y-you’re an ignorant monstrosity inside.” Her head reeled again and filled her with nausea. “Don’t you see, Mulciber? Only the weak accept death. It takes c-courage to live, yes, but it t-takes true bravery to s-stand your g-ground in a world aligned a-against you.” I don’t seek your pity, human! His tone sounded a bit frantic. “I am your friend, Mulciber. You are making a…a mistake.” Friend…? I…I don’t…I don’t need…! Since when did he question his beliefs? The girl was warping his mind! Had she finally broken him? Breena tilted her head upwards and glared at him as best as she could. How had she ever been scared of him? She understood him perfectly. Everything made sense now. She had found strength in her weaknesses. The compassion that had made her vulnerable in her former life was now invaluable. “You’re wrong, Mulciber. I’m only fourteen years old. I’m not as strong as you…but at least…at least I can admit my faults. That takes true power. I know I can’t…I can’t do everything alone.” She coughed again and whimpered from the dull throbbing in her abdomen. “Life is all about g-give and take. I need others to catch me when I fall. There’s nothing…nothing wrong with that. I need my friends and they…they need me.” She huffed and wiped the sweat from her brows. “There’s more to strength than…than raw might. You just don’t want to accept the…the truth. You’re too scared. That’s…that’s why….” She hacked up spittle and heaved wildly. She could no longer make out anything but blurs of incandescent light. “That’s why I’m stronger than you, Mulciber.” What? That…that doesn’t…that doesn’t…! “It’s your turn to prove your strength to me. Break…break free of Izanami and join me. You need me and I…and I need you. Don’t…don’t be a coward.” No more…no more, human! Mulciber let out his fiercest shriek yet. One curt glance to his left halted Veku and Lilim in their tracks. Even Leinth stopped her relentless advance. You…Mulciber hissed. You would call me a…a coward? Me? You are wrong! How…how dare you underestimate me? I am Mulciber, King of the Ifrits! “Then…then show me the worth of a king’s pride.”
