I can't believe I put off reading this novel for so long. It has been on my TBR forever and that is a definite travesty. This novel knocked me off my feet from he very start. Give me a prophecy and romantic twists any day. Throw in some attempted kidnappings along with the magic and I am hooked.
This was a story about finding yourself and not letting others determine your future for you. Faye has known for a long time that when the Culling happened she was going to be found to be nothing. No magic, no parter, nothing. Until that night comes and everything changes. Faye had no choice but to face her new future head on and find a way to save the ones she loves. From the moment the Culling happens, her whole life is turned upside down. She goes from a girl who was leaving to college to a girl who was fated to save everyone.
I really enjoyed the fact that Candace wrote Faye true to her age. She is a young girl who acts like it. Sometimes these novels start with a heroine who is strong headed and makes all the right decisions. I hate that. Faye makes mistakes, she is impulsive and young. She makes choices that seem right to her, and faces the repercussions for those choices. It was an empowering read.
The supporting characters in this novel were just as wonderful. We were given just enough information to get up hooked on them, but we are still left with the mystery of who they really are. Their past, their secrets.
This novel was all around fast paced and easily enjoyable. I am a huge PNR fan and will definitely be recommending this novel to my readers. It is one of those that sticks with you well after you are done reading it.
What if your destiny lay on the other side of death?
The annual Culling ceremony is a day every coming-of-age novice looks forward to within the Primeval Coven. It’s the start to being initiated into the Night Watchmen, humankind’s protectors, and it’s the long-awaited day when novices discover if they’re a Hunter or a Witch.
But this day is not a happy one for Faye Middleton. Not when she’s known her whole life that she’s a Defect and is about to face banishment in front of her fellow novices. She’s forced to attend the Culling with little hope for her future, but what she discovers about herself is far worse than she could’ve imagined. And far more dangerous.
Thrown into training and separated from her friends, Faye must learn to adjust. She struggles to find her place within the Coven, and with Jaxen Gramm, the darkly handsome and extremely unnerving man assigned to watch and protect her. Emotions run high, and when she discovers a deadly secret about him, her struggles deepen. As corruption within the Coven begins to unravel, Faye pieces together her role in saving the future of her people, and within Jaxen’s life...but will the truth save her, or be her undoing?
